MALVERN YOUTH CABINET - UPCOMING EVENTS
Community Clean Up
The Malvern Youth Cabinet had their Summer Community Clean Up on July 28 in partnership with Serve Canada and Parks and Rec. The youth split up into two teams and cleaned areas around the mall, Mother Theresa, Pearson and the Library and Rec. The MYC hopes to have bi-weekly clean ups starting next summer to help keep Malvern clean.
First Annual MFRC Cup
Over 8 teams competed in the first ever MFRC Cup on Friday August 1 at Mother Theresa Catholic School. There were two divisions, a Tweens and High School division. The games took place on the Nike Soccer Field and the football field. Many youth came out to support their friends in a day filled with fun competition. Trophies were awarded to winning teams and medals given to players nominated as MVPs by their teammates.
Annual Youth Forum: Dreams Within Your Reach
The "Dreams Within Your Reach" Youth Forum aimed to empower, motivate and inspire the youth of Malvern to pursue their dreams and goals. Many activities happened that day including a talent show, interactive activities, special guest speakers and information booths. There was also a very informative panel discussion which highlighted various forms of success. For more information on the event, visit the home page for an article about the day's events.
Malvern Community Festival
Our Community Festival celebrated the diversity in our community by bringing everyone together to enjoy entertainment, kids games, BBQ, and fun for the entire family. There was also storytelling in some of the local elementary schools.
MYC Food Drive
The Malvern Youth Cabinet recently completed a food drive at Pearson C.I. The drive was very successful as over 300 donations were collected and donated to Malvern Healthy Community Cupboard Food Bank. The MYC hopes to grow on this success and carry out a Food Drive including all of the local schools in Malvern.
MYC Community Walk
On October 3 2008, the Malvern Youth Cabinet held its annual Community Walk which raised funds for United Way Toronto. This year, the youth picked the theme of "Unity in the Community", celebrating how vibrant Malvern really is. The youth really felt passionate about changing some of the negative stereotypes that exist about Malvern. MYC members Chris Desir and Pooja Bhagat were the MCs for the day and discussed the purpose and importance of the walk. Local MPP Bas Balkissoon was also in attendance and said some inspiring words for the youth as they began their walk. The event was well attended by over 150 youth who were cheering andholding signs as they walked around, showing their community spirit. After the walk, they returned to Malvern Family Resource Centre for refreshments. "Unity in the Community" is just one of the many events that show the youth of Malvern are motivated to do positive things in the community despite all of the negative attention from the media. The Youth Cabinet is looking forward to building on the success of this walk and making next years even better.
